Bye Bye Engine Blow By
Engine blow-by usually indicates that an engine rebuild could be around the corner. But introducing a small corrective maintenance step could save big dollars.
At the sign of blow-by, most maintenance personnel then start to plan for the downtime around an engine rebuild.
It should be remembered that blow-by is a symptom. It’s not a condition, nor an indicator of wear. In fact, the early stages of blow-by are generally caused by engine deposits, such as piston ring carbon and cylinder glaze. There is a big window to correct blow-by before damage does occur.
Many sites have taken an innovative approach to correcting blow-by thanks to the the help of Brisbane based company Cost Effective Maintenance. In over 80% of cases engines have avoided an immediate rebuild, and significantly extended available service life.
While some engines may have excessive wear or damage, in the majority of cases, it’s a very simple, low cost exercise to correct blow-by problems, and importantly, it requires very little downtime:
- Remove carbon and oil sludge from ring grooves . Flushing Oil Concentrate is capable of safely dissolving tough carbon deposits via the crankcase oil. The purpose is to dissolve and disperse carbon from piston ring grooves, so that the rings can move freely and seal cleanly against the cylinder wall and ring grooves. That will restore pristine clean throughout, while recovering cylinder compression and blow-by control
- Remove carbon and deglaze cylinders. Decarbonize the top end with FTC / FPC Decarbonizer. This can be done while the equipment is operating normally, by adding it to the diesel fuel. It is very effective in burning off top end carbon and maintaining clean piston rings to ensure blow by is minimized.
“Over a period of 30 years, we’ve noted that, conservatively, 80% of engines that have undergone this procedure, have recovered good compression control and eliminated their blow-by.†Brid Walker Cost Effective MaintenanceÂ
